The Lares Trek, a lesser-known alternative to the Inca Trail, offers a stunning 4-day journey through the Andean mountains, winding its way to the legendary Machu Picchu. Starting in the remote Lares Valley, trekkers are immersed in breathtaking landscapes, from lush valleys and hot springs to high-altitude passes dotted with snow-capped peaks. Along the way, hikers pass traditional Andean villages, where indigenous Quechua communities maintain their centuries-old customs, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Have an early breakfast before you head out towards the 4.5-hour drive through the Sacred Valley to the village of Lares, where you can find the local hot springs to enjoy on your own. Lunch will be set before continuing with the hike. You will head towards the campsite for the night after 3.5 hours of hiking to Huacahuasi (12,300 ft). In the afternoon, enjoy watching local weavers showing their traditional techniques.

At almost 15 000 feet ascend to the Ipsayccasa Pass; one of the highest points of the trek. Take in the breathtaking views of Mount Veronica and the surrounding snow-wrapped peaks. Lunch will be waiting for you after your hike downhill at Ipsaycocha Lake. Afterward, you’ll visit Patacancha Town (12,300 ft), a textile community where Quechua is still spoken today.

In the morning you'll continue downhill through gorgeous valley to Pumamarca, an important archeological Inca site, then board the train to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. Enjoy a stroll around the traditional Andean town, and board your train to Aguas Calientes (6,730 ft), located at the base of Machu Picchu, where your hotel awaits you.

Today you will uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu during a guided tour of the Incan citadel. You'll visit the most important parts of the ruins to learn how and why they were constructed. Then you'll depart from Machu Picchu town and take a train ride to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival at the train station, you will be met and transferred to your Cusco hotel.
