FD Cultural Experience

Pallacta | Urubamba, Cusco

Visit the village of Pallacta, to spend a day with the Laucata family, a proud indigenous household whose traditions and way of life reflect centuries of ancestral knowledge passed down through generations.

The program begins with a warm welcome from your host family. They will open their home and hearts to you, sharing their daily lives. You will experience firsthand the time-honored practices that sustain them, including traditional agriculture, weaving, and animal husbandry. This is not a passive tour. It’s an opportunity to participate, ask questions, get your hands dirty, and connect with the rhythms of rural Andean life.

One of the day's highlights is the Pachamanca lunch experience. Pachamanca, which means "earth oven" in Quechua, is a ceremonial meal dating back to Inca times. You will learn to prepare this traditional dish from scratch by layering marinated meats, potatoes, corn, and other local ingredients with hot stones. Then, the dish is buried underground to cook! As the delicious aromas rise from the earth, you’ll gather with the family to share stories and laughter over a mouthwatering feast.

Next, you will take a guided tour of Pumamarka, a remarkable archaeological site that once served as a strategic military outpost during the Inca Empire. Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the valley, Pumamarka’s stone walls and terraces offer a glimpse into the ingenuity of Inca architecture and defense strategies. Here, history and nature intertwine to create a serene yet powerful atmosphere that invites reflection.

This tour is also available as a half-day excursion, and we recommend adding it to your itinerary the day before the three-day Cachicata trek since the two locations are close together.
