Cusco trek update:
Alternative route reopens access to Humantay Lagoon and Salcantay
Good news for travelers planning to explore the Cusco region. Access to two of its most iconic natural attractions, Humantay Lagoon and the Salkantay Mountain, has officially reopened via a newly implemented alternative route.
Following temporary closures caused by heavy rains and geological risks earlier in the season, local authorities have enabled the Llaqtallaqtalloq alternative route, developed by the Municipality of Mollepata. This new route was designed to provide a safer access point for both domestic and international visitors, while protecting the wellbeing of travelers, guides, and local communities.
These destinations remain key highlights for visitors to Cusco, especially for those interested in scenic hikes and soft adventure experiences. They are also popular additions to itineraries that include Machu Picchu, offering travelers the chance to explore the Andes beyond the classic routes.
While access has been restored, it’s important to note that conditions in the region can vary due to seasonal weather. Travel advisors are encouraged to work closely with trusted local operators and stay updated on route conditions. Overall, this reopening represents a positive step for tourism in the area, ensuring that visitors can once again enjoy these remarkable landscapes safely.
Peru’s national parks showcase the country's extraordinary contrasts. We design journeys that transition fluidly from archaeological wonders to rainforest biodiversity to high Andean wilderness. Each chapter is distinct yet connected by a shared commitment to conservation and cultural continuity.
